Achieving Academic Success: Key Components of Schoolwide Title 1 Programs
What is a Schoolwide Title 1 Program?
A Title 1 Schoolwide program is a method of delivering Title 1 services in eligible schools. It allows the school to address the educational need of children living in impoverished communities with comprehensive strategies for improving the entire school so that every student achieves high levels of academic proficiency.
Schoolwide programs have a great latitude as to determine how to organize their operations and allocate the multiple funding sources available to them. They do not have to identify particular children as eligible for services or separately track federal dollars. Instead, Schoolwide programs can use all allocated funds to increase the amount and quality of learning time. In this way, they can embrace a high-quality curriculum according to a comprehensive plan that ensures all children meet the state’s challenging academic standards.
Schoolwide programs serve all children in a school. All staff, resources, and classes are part of the overall Schoolwide program. The purpose is to generate high levels of academic achievement in core subject areas for all students, especially those students most in need. This purpose is achieved through:
- High-quality instruction
- Comprehensive reform strategies and methods that are based on the use of scientific research
- Strategies and methods to improve teacher quality and professional development
- Small group setting for literacy instruction for those with the highest needs
All students are considered Title 1 students and receive the benefits of Title 1 services. In addition, some students are identified for more focused intervention based on assessments and classroom performance. Intervention for these highest-need students is provided in a small group setting with a 1:10 teacher-to-student ratio at the elementary level.
- Parents are notified about the school’s Title 1 program on the building’s website.
- Parents are invited to participate in literacy and learning.
- Parents are provided information about Title 1 through Parent/teacher conferences, through the parent involvement plan, and on their building’s website.
- Share a love of learning and set a good example by reading, writing letters and/or lists, comparing prices, etc.
- Make learning fun by playing educational games, visiting the library, and listening to and talking with your child.
- Show interest in your child’s school day by asking specific questions and praising effort and improvement.
